The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 17,000 network laser printers manufactured by Xerox, Hitachi, and GCC. The recall covers specific models sold nationwide between January 1995 and September 1998. The affected units include the Xerox Engineering Systems Model 8808; Hitachi Printing Solutions America Models Typhoon 8 and Typhoon 16; and GCC Technologies Models Elite XL408, Elite XL608, Elite XL608LC, Elite XL808, Elite XL1208, Elite XL1208 PM, and Elite XL616.
The recall is due to a fire hazard. Arcing may cause the fuser assembly to overheat. There have been three reports of overheating that caused minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Users should switch off the printer power when unattended and ensure that the "power save" mode is enabled. Consumers should contact their commercial distributor for information on obtaining a free retrofit.
