What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect that could cause the wheel hub to detach, creating a potential for injury or death, but no injuries have been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported injury.
Plain-English summary
Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. is recalling about 360 2002 Kawasaki "Bayou" ATVs, including model numbers KLF220A-15, KLF300-B15, and KLF300-C14. These four-wheel ATVs were sold nationwide by Kawasaki dealers in November 2001 for between $3,000 and $5,000.
The recall addresses a defect where the axle nuts on the rear wheel hubs (for KLF220 and KLF300-B models) and the front and rear wheel hubs (for KLF300-C models) may not have been tightened to the specified torque before the cotter pin was inserted. If the axle nut or cotter pin fails, the hub could come off the axle shaft, creating the potential for an incident resulting in injury or death to the rider. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should contact their Kawasaki dealer to schedule an appointment to have the correct torque applied to the axle nut. Kawasaki has notified consumers directly about this recall. For more information, consumers can contact Kawasaki toll-free at (866) 802-9381 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.
