Playskool Toy Chests Recalled Due to Lid Collapse Injury Risk
CPSC and XL Machine Ltd. are recalling Playskool Toy Chests sold at Target because loose screws can cause lids to collapse, posing an injury risk to children.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (a bruise to the neck), but no serious injuries or fatalities are documented, fitting the High severity criteria.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and XL Machine Ltd. are recalling Playskool Toy Chests sold at Target stores nationwide. The recall involves approximately 3,300 units of blue toy chests measuring 18.5 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches. These chests were sold from October 2001 through December 2001 for about $50 and feature "Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head" characters on the lid. The chests were made in China and distributed by XL Machine Ltd. of Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
The recall is being issued because screws in the lid support hinges can loosen over time and fall out of the base. If this occurs, the lids can collapse suddenly, which may cause injuries to children's heads, necks, fingers, or hands. CPSC and XL Machine Ltd. have received one report of an injury, specifically a bruise to the neck, resulting from a screw coming out of the hinge.
Consumers should immediately take these toy chests away from young children. To obtain a refund or store credit, consumers should return the product to the Target store where it was purchased. For more information, consumers can contact XL Machine toll-free at (866) 746-8097 or visit Target's website at www.target.com.
