BMW motorcycle emergency call system may have been deactivated
BMW is recalling certain 2025 motorcycles with the optional emergency call system because a software programming error may have deactivated eCall, so first responders may not be notified of a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 3 covers risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported: the motorcycle rides normally and the fault affects post-crash notification rather than any vehicle control system.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2025 F 900 GS, F 800 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, R 1300 GS, S 1000 RR, S 1000 R and K 1600 GT motorcycles equipped with the optional emergency call system. About 33 units are potentially affected.
The emergency call system (eCall) may have been deactivated due to a software programming error.
NHTSA states that in an emergency, first responders may not receive notification of the crash or emergency location, increasing the risk of injury to riders.
The electronic control unit software will be updated over the air or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were scheduled to be mailed on September 12, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
