BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain 2008-2018 BMW motorcycles, including the F800GS, F650GS, F800GS Adventure, F800R, F800GT, R1200GS, R1200GS Adventure, R1200R, R1200RS, and S1000XR models. The recall affects approximately 47,775 vehicles.
The defect involves optional aluminum luggage cases or case mounts that may partially block the rear reflex reflectors. This condition causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." If the rear reflex reflectors are obscured from view, it can increase the risk of a crash.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will install reflectors on the cases or an additional bracket with rear reflex reflectors for the case mounts, free of charge. The recall began October 16, 2017.
