2025 Freightliner trucks recalled for insufficient air tank capacity
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain 2025 Freightliner, Western Star, and related models due to undersized air tanks that reduce braking performance and increase crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system (air brakes). While no injuries or deaths are reported in the source, the hazard—reduced braking performance increasing crash risk—represents a significant risk of harm to occupants and others, meeting the High (score 3) threshold.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2025 Freightliner 114SD, Business Class M2, Cascadia, and Western Star 49X vehicles. The air tank capacity may be too small, resulting in reduced braking performance. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
Reduced brake performance can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash. Owner notification letters were mailed July 1, 2025. Dealers will inspect and replace the air tank or install an additional air tank, as necessary, free of charge.
Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-8712. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov.
