Kia Niro floor wiring damage can stop airbags and seat belts deploying
Kia is recalling certain 2023-2025 Niro EV, PHEV and Hybrid vehicles because damaged floor wiring under the front passenger seat can stop front airbags and seat belts deploying, or deploy a curtain airbag unintentionally.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: Rubric level 4 covers structural vehicle defects: damaged wiring can leave both the airbags and seat belts inoperative in a crash, removing occupant protection outright.
Plain-English summary
Kia America, Inc. is recalling certain 2023-2025 Niro EV, Plug-in Hybrid and Hybrid vehicles. About 80,255 units are potentially affected.
The floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat may become damaged, which can prevent the front air bags and seat belts from deploying properly, or cause an unintended side curtain air bag deployment.
NHTSA states that air bags and seat belts that deploy improperly, or an air bag deploying unintentionally, can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Dealers will inspect, replace and reroute the floor wiring assembly as necessary, and install wiring covers, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 27, 2025. Owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
