2024 Hyundai Santa Fe sunshade switch defect increases injury risk

Hyundai is recalling 34,964 units of the 2024 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid with faulty switch knobs that may not retract, creating an injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This defect poses a theoretical risk of injury from unexpected sunshade closure, matching the rubric criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported. No actual injuries or deaths have been documented in the source.

Plain-English summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling certain 2024 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid vehicles. The overhead console rear sunshade switch knob may not be fully recessed, which can result in unintentional closing of the sunshade. This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, which governs power-operated window, partition and roof panel systems.

An unexpectedly closing sunshade can increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. Owners should contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 to arrange the free replacement of the switch knobs. Notification letters were mailed to owners on December 2, 2025.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov for more information.
