Altec Aerial Devices Recalled for Defective Exterior Lighting Wire Harness
Altec is recalling 2023-2024 aerial devices and related truck-mounted equipment due to lighting wire harness overload that may prevent vehicle lights from illuminating, reducing visibility to other drivers and increasing the risk of crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a functional safety defect that violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 governing exterior lighting. Non-functioning lights directly increase the risk of crashes due to reduced visibility to other drivers. However, no injuries or property damage have been reported, limiting the severity below 4.
Plain-English summary
Altec Industries, Inc. is recalling certain 2023-2024 aerial devices, digger diggers, pressure diggers, service trucks, reel lifters, pressure washers, and articulating crane models built on a Freightliner M2 Plus chassis. The vehicles are equipped with lighting wire harnesses that may be overloaded, preventing the vehicle lighting from illuminating properly.
These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, which governs lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. Non-functional exterior lighting reduces the vehicle's visibility to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
Approximately 3,425 vehicles are potentially affected. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 8, 2024. Dealers will rework the lighting wire harness and update the trailer module as necessary, free of charge. For more information, owners can contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832. Those with questions can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
