Toyota Prius Prime rear door opener switch water intrusion recall
Toyota is recalling 2023–2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles because water may enter the rear door switch, causing it to short circuit and allow the rear door to open unexpectedly while driving or during a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect involving an electrical component that creates a risk of unintended door opening during vehicle operation or crash, increasing injury risk. The source text describes a risk-of-harm scenario (unexpected door opening while moving or in a crash) without reported injuries, which per the rubric places it at severity 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023–2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles equipped with rear door opener switches that can allow water ingress. When water enters the rear door switch, it may cause an electrical short circuit.
This short circuit can result in an unlocked rear door opening unexpectedly. An unexpectedly open door while the vehicle is moving or during a crash increases the risk of injury to occupants.
Dealers will replace both right and left rear door opener switches at no cost to owners. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2024. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. For additional information, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
