Toyota is recalling 2016-2017 Prius vehicles because the parking brake cable may disengage, potentially allowing the vehicle to roll unexpectedly and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (parking brake cable disengagement) that creates a risk of the vehicle rolling unexpectedly, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe rating involving significant injury risk or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Prius vehicles manufactured between August 6, 2015, and October 3, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a foot-operated parking brake system that has a parking brake cable that may disengage from the mechanism.
If the parking brake cable disengages and the transmission is left in a gear other than 'Park' while the ignition is on and the driver leaves the vehicle, the vehicle may roll unexpectedly. This condition increases the risk of a crash.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a clip at the parking brake cable end to prevent the cable from disengaging, free of charge. The recall began November 10, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
