What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a safety-critical functional defect affecting rear visibility and reverse lighting systems, which are required by federal safety standards (FMVSS 111 and 108). No injuries or deaths have been reported, placing this in the High severity category as a risk-of-harm product where actual injury has not yet occurred.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. The vehicles have a defective gear position sensor in the manual transmission. When the vehicle is placed in reverse, this sensor may fail, causing the rearview camera to not display the rearview image and the reverse lights to not illuminate.
This defect affects 6,298 vehicles. The affected vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 for rear visibility and FMVSS 108 for lamps and reflective devices. A disabled rearview camera can decrease the driver's visibility of the rear area, and disabled reverse lights may not alert other road users that the vehicle is reversing, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Owners should contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153). Dealers will replace the gear position sensor free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 16, 2023.
