Ford Explorer backup camera display failure reduces rear visibility

Certain 2020-2022 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles have a software issue where the backup camera display does not appear when turned off before reversing, reducing rear visibility and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The source does not report any deaths, injuries, or actual crashes. This is a risk-of-harm product—rear visibility loss—where injury has not yet been reported, qualifying for Score 3 per the rubric.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 523 certain 2020-2022 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with a 12.1-inch Integrated Computer Screen (ICS). These vehicles have a software issue where the backup camera rearview image will not appear on the display if the Display On/Off Button is used to turn the display to "Off" prior to placing the vehicle in reverse.

When the backup camera rearview image does not appear, the driver's rear visibility is reduced, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will update the ICS software free of charge. Ford owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
