2023 Kia Sportage and Related Vehicles Instrument Cluster Display Failure
The instrument cluster display in certain 2023 Kia vehicles may fail to show any information when started, preventing drivers from viewing critical safety data like tire pressure and warning lights. Kia will update the software for free.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm vehicle defect where no injuries or deaths have been reported. The inability to display critical safety information such as tire pressure and warning lights creates an elevated crash risk, but no actual harm has been documented. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products without reported injuries qualify as High (3).
Plain-English summary
Kia America is recalling certain 2023 model year vehicles equipped with a digital instrument cluster featuring a 4.2-inch LCD screen. The instrument cluster may fail to display any information when the vehicle is started, leaving the display completely blank.
A blank instrument cluster will not show critical safety information including tire pressure data, warning messages, and warning lights. This loss of essential driver information increases the risk of a crash and fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 101 and 138.
The recall affects 2023 Kia Sportage, Sportage Hybrid, Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, Niro, Niro Hybrid, Niro Plug-in Hybrid, Soul, and Telluride vehicles. Approximately 108,936 units are potentially affected.
Kia dealers will update the instrument cluster software free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 26, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
