What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect affecting reverse lighting visibility with no reported injuries or property damage. The hazard presents theoretical crash risk without confirmed incidents, qualifying as risk-of-harm where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Rivian Automotive, LLC is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 Rivian R1S vehicles. The reverse light beam on these vehicles may not be visible when viewed from certain angles. This visibility issue means the affected vehicles do not meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, which governs lamps and reflective devices.
The poor visibility of the reverse lights increases the risk of a crash. Drivers and other road users may not be able to see that the vehicle is in reverse, which could lead to unsafe situations.
The recall affects an estimated 5,030 vehicles. Rivian Automotive has already mailed owner notification letters as of July 12, 2023. The company will repair or replace the reverse lights for free.
