2022 Ford F-53 and F-59 brake caliper bolts may loosen

Ford is recalling certain 2022 F-53 and F-59 vehicles because improperly tightened rear brake caliper bolts could loosen and damage brake lines or wheels, increasing crash risk. Dealers will inspect and repair at no cost.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural defect affecting the brake system that could increase crash risk through caliper loosening and brake line damage. However, no injuries, illnesses, or actual incidents have been reported, and the hazard remains theoretical. Per the rubric, theoretical hazards with no reported harm are capped at score 3.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2022 Ford F-53 and F-59 vehicles. The rear brake caliper attachment bolts may not be tightened correctly, which can allow the brake caliper to loosen and potentially damage the wheel or brake lines.

If the wheel is damaged, it can result in a loss of tire pressure. If the brake lines are damaged, brake fluid may leak and brake performance may be reduced. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

The defect was reported to NHTSA on October 3, 2023 (NHTSA Campaign Number 23V164000). Approximately 644 vehicles are potentially affected.

Owners should contact a Ford dealer to have the rear caliper bolts inspected and tightened at no charge. Damaged bolts will be replaced free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 27, 2023. For more information, owners may call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
