2023 Mack Granite Trucks Recalled for Loose Axle Fasteners
Mack is recalling approximately 17 model-year 2023 Granite trucks because front-drive steer axle fasteners may not have been properly tightened and could come loose, risking loss of steering control and crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect involving critical fasteners that could result in complete axle assembly separation and loss of steering control. No crashes or injuries have been reported, making the hazard currently theoretical. However, the potential consequences—loss of vehicle control—are serious enough to qualify as a high-risk issue.
Plain-English summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 Granite (GR) trucks because the front-drive steer axle fasteners may not have been tightened sufficiently during manufacturing. These fasteners could come loose, resulting in complete separation of the axle assembly joints.
If the axle assembly separates, the vehicle will lose steering control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
Approximately 17 vehicles are affected. Owners were notified by mail on March 20, 2023. Affected owners should contact a Mack dealer to have the axle fasteners replaced and tightened at no cost. Owners can reach Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177, or contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
