Ford Explorer automatic transmission loose bolt prevents park gear engagement

Ford is recalling 2022-2023 Explorer vehicles with automatic transmissions. A loose bolt may prevent park gear engagement, creating rollaway and crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: Transmission mechanical defect with rollaway hazard and crash/injury risk. No injuries or crashes reported; the hazard is potential rather than actual. Meets the criterion for high-severity risk-of-harm products without reported injury.

Plain-English summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1,138 vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, including 2022-2023 Ford Explorer, F-150, Bronco, and Mustang models, and 2023 Lincoln Aviator vehicles.

The affected vehicles may contain a loose bolt in the automatic transmission that could prevent the transmission from engaging the park gear. Although the gear shifter position may indicate the vehicle is in park, the transmission may not actually be secured.

This defect creates a rollaway hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Ford dealers will inspect the affected transmissions and replace them if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 25, 2023. Affected owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (Ford recall number 23S06) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
