2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator and Corsair Seat Belt Warning Chime Duration Defect
Ford is recalling certain 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviators and Corsairs because the seat belt warning chime may activate for less than 4 seconds, failing to properly alert unbelted drivers.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No deaths or injuries have been reported. This defect involves a safety-critical warning system that fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208, creating a theoretical risk of increased injury during a crash. Per the rubric, when no injuries are reported and the hazard is theoretical, the score is at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling 101,001 certain 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with a Revel Audio System. The seat belt warning chime may activate for less than 4 seconds when the driver's seat belt is not buckled and the vehicle is started, rather than sounding for a sufficient duration.
These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, which requires adequate occupant crash protection. An audible warning chime that does not properly alert drivers of an unbelted seat belt can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Affected owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule the free software update to the audio control module. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 7, 2023. Additional information is available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or at www.nhtsa.gov. Ford's recall number is 22C35.
