2022 Volkswagen Golf R Sunroof Switch May Close Unexpectedly

Volkswagen is recalling certain 2022 Golf R and Golf GTI vehicles because the sunroof touch switch may be too sensitive and inadvertently pressed, causing unintended sunroof auto-closure and risking injury.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The defect affects a safety-critical power-operated window system with potential for unintended auto-closure to cause injury, but no illnesses or injuries have been reported as of the recall notice.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2022 Volkswagen Golf R and Golf GTI vehicles. The touch switch that controls the sunroof may be overly sensitive, allowing it to be accidentally activated.

When the sunroof switch is inadvertently pressed, the sunroof may close automatically without the driver's intent. This unintended auto-closure can result in injury to occupants or bystanders whose fingers, hands, or head may be in the path of the closing roof panel.

Affected owners will be notified by letter starting September 23, 2022. Volkswagen dealers will replace the roof module switch at no cost. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
