2022-2023 Toyota Tacoma Defective Child Seat Anchor Welds
Toyota is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles due to insufficient welds in the upper child seat anchors. These defects may prevent proper anchoring of child seats, increasing the risk of injury during crashes or sudden stops.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect presents a risk of child injury if a seat becomes improperly anchored during a crash or sudden stop, but no injuries or deaths have been reported in the source. This corresponds to the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported,' warranting a High (Severity 3) rating.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2022-2023 Toyota Tacoma vehicles. The upper child seat anchors contain one or more individual welds that may be insufficient, failing to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 225 requirements for child restraint anchorage systems.
When a child seat is not properly anchored due to insufficient welds, it may move during a sudden stop or crash, increasing the risk of injury to a child occupant. Approximately 75,316 vehicles are potentially affected by this defect.
Toyota will remedy this issue at no cost to owners. Dealers will inspect the upper child seat anchors and reweld them as necessary. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed beginning September 2, 2022.
