What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting the steering system, a safety-critical component. Although no injuries have been reported, the potential for loss of steering control warrants a Severe classification per NHTSA criteria.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021–2022 Dodge Durango and 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The steering gear rack bar may have been insufficiently hardened during manufacturing, which could allow it to bind within the steering rack assembly, affecting an estimated 931 units.
When the steering gear binds, drivers may experience difficulty steering or a complete loss of steering control. This can increase the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will replace the steering gear assembly free of charge for all affected vehicles. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 12, 2022. Owners can contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-852-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
