2021 Aluma trailers recalled for loose mounting bracket on trailer bed

Aluma KLM recalls 2021 Aluma trailers for loose front latch rivet nuts that may cause the mounting bracket to disengage, tilting the trailer bed unexpectedly and increasing crash risk. Dealers will install replacement hardware free of charge.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect meeting the rubric criterion for High: 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.' No deaths, serious injuries, or incidents are documented; the hazard is theoretical—potential for unexpected trailer bed tilting and crash.

Plain-English summary

Aluma KLM is recalling certain 2021 Aluma model 8214HSTILT trailers due to a structural defect in the front latch assembly. The rivet nuts securing the angle mounting bracket may not remain secure, potentially causing the bracket to become loose.

If the mounting bracket loosens or disengages, the trailer bed may tilt unexpectedly. This increases the risk of a crash. The recall affects approximately 160 trailers.

Owner notification letters were mailed on December 21, 2021. The remedy is free installation of new mounting hardware by authorized Aluma dealers. Owners may contact Aluma customer service at 1-866-415-3285 for service appointments or inquiries. Additional information is available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or at www.nhtsa.gov.
