Mack heavy trucks recalled for electronic stability control software malfunction
Mack trucks (2018-2022) with electronic stability control may drift out of their lane at certain speeds, increasing crash risk. Dealers will reprogram the control units free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm defect in a safety-critical system (Electronic Stability Control) that could lead to crashes. However, no crashes, injuries, or deaths are reported in the source, limiting the score to at most 3 per the rubric.
Plain-English summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain 2018-2022 Mack Anthem, Granite, and Pinnacle heavy trucks equipped with camelback rear suspension and electronic stability control systems. The Electronic Stability Control software in these vehicles may fail to maintain proper lane control at certain speeds.
These vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 136, which governs Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles. A vehicle that cannot maintain its lane increases the risk of a crash.
The recall affects 557 vehicles across multiple model variants: Mack Anthem (AN), Granite (GR/GU), and Pinnacle (CHU/CXU/PI) from model years 2018 through 2022.
To remedy the issue, Mack dealers will reprogram the vehicle control units at no cost to owners. The recall began on April 21, 2021. Owners can contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177 (reference number SC0423), or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.safercar.gov for more information.
