What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting the power train's clutch assembly with potential for fire and loss of drive. While no injuries have been reported, the serious inherent hazards of power train failure in a motor vehicle warrant Severe classification.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Jeep Gladiator and 2018-2021 Jeep Wrangler vehicles equipped with manual transmissions due to a defect in the clutch assembly. The clutch pressure plate may overheat and fracture.
Overheated clutch components increase the risk of fire. Damage to nearby components can result in debris falling onto the road or loss of drive, increasing crash risk.
Approximately 42,887 vehicles are affected. Owners will be notified by mail, and dealers will add software to reduce engine torque when clutch temperatures rise, at no charge to owners. The manufacturer issued a stop sale order for affected vehicles effective February 25, 2021, with owner notification letters mailed on March 4, 2021.
For more information, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit safercar.gov.
