CHTC HT-35 and HT-45 Buses Recalled for Non-Compliant Wheelchair Lifts

CHTC Bus Group is recalling 2016-2018 HT-35 and HT-45 buses because their wheelchair platform lifts failed to complete the required compliance certification process.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (wheelchair lift) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for theoretical hazards without confirmed incidents.

Plain-English summary

CHTC Bus Group is recalling certain 2016-2018 HT-35 and HT-45 buses equipped with ADA wheelchair platform lifts. The recall involves four vehicles in total. The defect is that the lift devices have not completed the compliance certification process, meaning they fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) numbers 403 and 404 regarding platform lift devices and installations.

Lift devices that have not completed compliance certification cannot be assumed to be safe, which increases the risk of injury. CHTC has already removed the non-compliant wheelchair platform lifts from all affected vehicles, thereby remediating the issue. The recall began on February 19, 2020.
