What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain 2018-2019 Gladiator, MetroStar, K2, K3, and K4 emergency response chassis cabs and motor home chassis, as well as 2019-2020 K2 models. The recall involves a defect in the brake relay valve that may have an air flow restriction.

This defect may result in an extended stopping distance, causing the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems." An increase in stopping distance increases the risk of a crash.

Spartan will notify the vehicle manufacturers that purchased the affected chassis. Spartan dealers will inspect and replace the valves, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 19, 2019. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
