The recall addresses a defect where an incorrect rear seat back covering carpet may have been installed on the split-rear seat back. This error can cover the child seat anchorage point (top tether) located in the center position of the rear seat, making it inaccessible for use.

As a result of this defect, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems." If the upper anchorage point is covered, a child seat cannot be secured as intended in the center position, which increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will check the rear seat back covering carpet on the affected vehicles and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 6, 2019.
