GM Recalls 2016-2018 Silverado and Sierra 3500 Trucks for Fuel Tank Fire Risk
General Motors is recalling 2016-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks because a fuel sensor defect may cause the front tank to overfill, potentially leading to a fuel leak and fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel tank expansion and contact with driveshaft) that explicitly increases the risk of a fire, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain 2016-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks. The recall involves approximately 18,574 vehicles.
The fuel-level sensor in the front tank may stick in a low-level position, which allows the rear tank to overfill the front tank. If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. This hole will leak fuel, which, in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.
GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear-tank fuel-pump module, inspect the front tank, and, if necessary, replace the front tank, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2019. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
