Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling 5,309 vehicles, including specific 2018-2019 BMW and 2019 MINI models, due to a defect in the crankshaft sensor. The sensor may be equipped with incorrect firmware, which prevents it from properly processing input from the crankshaft reluctor ring. This malfunction can result in the vehicle stalling while in operation.
The affected vehicles include 2018 BMW 540d xDrive, 230i, M240i, X1, X2, 330i, 340i, 530i, 540i, 530e, 640i, and 330e models, as well as 2019 BMW 430i, 440i, 740i, and MINI Cooper, Cooper S, JCW, Countryman, and Clubman models. A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.
The recall began on September 6, 2018, and was expanded on September 12, 2018. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
