Spartan Emergency Vehicles Recalled for Missing Air Brake Safety Valve
Spartan is recalling 2001-2018 emergency vehicles because a missing pressure protection valve could cause air brake failure.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the air brake system that could lead to a loss of braking capability and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain 2001-2018 Spartan Gladiator, Diamond, MetroStar, and Advantage emergency response vehicles. The recall affects 309 vehicles that may not be equipped with a pressure protection valve installed between the air reservoir and the lubrication control module.
If the air line becomes disconnected between the lubrication control module and the air reservoir, a loss of air to the air brake system could occur. This condition causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems," and increases the risk of a crash.
Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and install a pressure protection valve, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on June 26, 2018. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
