Altec Recalls Aerial Devices Missing Towing Limit Placards
Altec is recalling 2012-2018 aerial devices missing a placard stating maximum towing limits, which could lead to an overloaded receiver tube and increased crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect (missing placard leading to potential overload) that could result in a crash, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Altec Industries Inc. is recalling certain 2012-2018 Altec LS63 and LS87 aerial devices equipped with a pintle hook mounted into the Class 3 receiver tube. These vehicles were shipped without a placard that provides the maximum allowable towing limit.
The missing placard may result in the receiver tube being overloaded. An overloaded receiver tube could detach, increasing the risk of a crash.
Altec will notify owners and provide a placard stating the limit of the receiver tube assembly as 600lbs vertical load and 6,000lbs towing capacity, free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2018. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-877-462-5832 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
