Mitsubishi is recalling 2004-2006 Lancers because passenger air bag inflators may explode during deployment, potentially causing serious injury or death.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in 'serious injury or death' due to metal fragments striking occupants, which aligns with the rubric criteria for Severe (4) involving significant injury reports or potential for serious harm.
Plain-English summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. is recalling certain 2004-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer vehicles. This recall affects vehicles that previously received a like-for-like passenger side frontal air bag inflator under recall 15V321 as an interim remedy. It also includes 2004-2006 Lancers located in Guam or Saipan that previously received or never received a new inflator under recall 15V321 or 17V569.
The passenger side frontal air bag inflators in these vehicles may be susceptible to moisture intrusion. Over time, this condition could cause the inflator to explode in the event of an air bag deployment. If the inflator explodes during a crash, metal fragments could strike vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will install a final replacement passenger side frontal air bag inflator free of charge. The recall began on April 26, 2018. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
