Walter Kidde is recalling specific fire extinguisher models that may clog or have nozzles detach, potentially causing injury or failure during a fire.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (fire extinguisher) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products with potential for injury but no confirmed incidents.
Plain-English summary
Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc. is recalling 134 models of Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers and eight models of Push Button Pindicator Fire Extinguishers. The recall involves approximately 2.5 million units. The defect may cause the extinguishers to become clogged, preventing them from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate. In certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force to cause injury and render the product inoperable.
If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire. The recall began on November 2, 2017. Kidde will notify affected vehicle manufacturers that equipped new vehicles with these extinguishers, as well as purchasers of replacement or aftermarket units.
