What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking occupants, causing serious injury or death, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating involving significant injury or death reports/risks.

Plain-English summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 B-Series trucks manufactured between June 6, 2006, and January 22, 2009. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or registered in specific states and territories designated as "Zone A," including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additionally, certain model year 2007-2008 B-Series trucks manufactured between February 21, 2006, and April 28, 2008, sold or registered in "Zone B" states such as Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, and others, are also included. Vehicles not in these zones are not part of this recall.

The defect involves certain passenger frontal air bag inflator modules that may rupture during deployment due to propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to humidity and temperature cycling. If the inflator ruptures, metal fragments may strike vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death. Mazda advises owners not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed.

Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2018. Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
