What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (air brakes) that increases the risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain model year 2004-2016 Gladiator tractor-drawn aerial emergency vehicles manufactured between September 12, 2004, and September 30, 2015. The recall involves 38 vehicles.
The air brakes on these vehicles may have excessive actuation and release timing, which lengthens the distance needed to stop the vehicle. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems." If a longer distance is needed to stop, there is an increased risk of a crash.
Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles with a new 3/8" control line free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2016. Owners may contact Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
