Maserati Recalls 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli for Gear Indicator Defect
Maserati is recalling 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles because the gear indicator may mislead drivers about the transmission position, creating a risk of injury when exiting.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission/gear indicator) where the source text explicitly describes a scenario where drivers may be struck by the vehicle and injured, meeting the criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Maserati North America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles manufactured between June 1, 2013, and February 28, 2014. The affected vehicles are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector. A total of 12,631 vehicles are involved in this recall.
The defect may mislead owners about which gear the vehicle is in and may not adequately warn the driver when the driver's door is opened if the vehicle is not in PARK. This allows drivers to exit the vehicle while it is still in gear. If a driver believes the transmission is in PARK but it is not, and the parking brake is not engaged, the vehicle may move, potentially striking and injuring the driver.
Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update free of charge. The remedy software is currently in development. Owners were mailed an interim notification on July 1, 2016, and a second notice will be mailed when the software is available. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-877-696-2737 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
