NHTSA is recalling 2016 Toyota and Scion vehicles because the load carrying capacity label may be incorrect, potentially leading to vehicle overload.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Plain-English summary

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC is recalling certain model year 2016 Toyota Yaris, RAV4, Land Cruiser, and 4Runner vehicles, as well as Scion FR-S, iM, and TC vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured between January 28, 2016, and March 14, 2016.

The recall is issued because the Load Carrying Capacity Modification Label may not reflect the correct added weight of installed accessories. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars." An incorrect label may result in the vehicle being overloaded, which increases the risk of a crash.

Southeast Toyota Distributors will notify owners and provide a corrected label to be installed over the inaccurate label at no charge. The recall began on June 3, 2016. Owners can contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
