Toyota Highlander Tires Recalled for Insufficient Load Rating
Southeast Toyota Distributors is recalling 2021-2024 Highlander vehicles equipped with 20-inch accessory tires with insufficient load rating. These tires can fail under normal use and increase crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect where installed tires lack the load rating required for the vehicle's weight capacity, creating a direct risk of tire failure and crashes. However, no injuries, crashes, or deaths have been reported in the source text, and per the rubric, risk-of-harm products where no injury has yet been reported score at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC is recalling certain 2021-2024 Toyota Highlander vehicles. The recalled vehicles were equipped with 20-inch accessory tires that have an insufficient load rating for the vehicle's Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).
These tires do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110 (Tire Selection and Rims). Tires with a load rating insufficient for the vehicle's GAWR can become overloaded during normal use and fail, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact Southeast Toyota Distributors customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET will inspect the tires and information placard and replace them as necessary at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 16, 2024.
For additional information, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
