Toyota Recalls Vehicles with Inaccurate Weight Labels
Southeast Toyota is recalling specific 2008-2013 models because weight labels were inaccurate, potentially leading to vehicle overloading and tire failure.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where tire failure could lead to crashes, injuries, or property damage, but the source text does not report any actual incidents or fatalities.
Plain-English summary
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota and Scion vehicles. The affected models include the Tundra, RAV4, Sequoia, Corolla, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Venza, 4Runner, Tacoma, Sienna, Prius, FR-S, XD, XB, and TC. A total of 7,525 vehicles are affected by this recall.
The defect involves vehicle labels that were outside the allowable one percent accuracy of the actual weight added. Consequently, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." An inaccurate label could lead owners to overload their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in tire failure, which may cause a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions for installation. A small group of affected vehicles will need additional remedies that are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
