Nissan Recalls 2013-2015 Altima Vehicles for Hood Latch Defect
Nissan is recalling 2013-2015 Altima vehicles because the secondary hood latch may fail to engage, allowing the hood to open while driving.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (hood latch) that could cause the hood to open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling approximately 846,000 model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured between March 6, 2012, and December 31, 2014. The recall addresses a defect in the secondary hood latch, which may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.
If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving. This condition increases the risk of a vehicle crash.
This recall supersedes previous recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, as the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. Dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
