Spartan MetroStar and Defense Chassis Cabs Recalled for Axle Nut Issue
Spartan Motors is recalling 2014-2015 MetroStar and Defense Department chassis cabs because improperly tightened axle nuts may cause the driveshaft to disconnect.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveshaft disconnection) that results in a loss of propulsion and increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Spartan Motors USA is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 MetroStar Chassis cabs built for Emergency Response use and ILAV Chassis cabs for Department of Defense use. These vehicles were manufactured between December 9, 2014, and June 3, 2015, and are equipped with certain drive axles manufactured by Marmon-Herrington. The recall affects 23 vehicles.
The affected axles have hex nuts on the flange yoke that may not have been properly tightened. If the hex nuts are not tightened to specification, the driveshaft may disconnect from the drive axle. This failure results in a loss of propulsion and increases the risk of a crash.
Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the hex nuts and tighten them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 16, 2015. Owners may contact Marmon Herrington customer service at 1-517-543-6400 or Spartan customer service at 1-800-543-4277. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
