What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag may fail to deploy, explicitly increasing the risk of occupant injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2015 Jetta, Golf, and E-Golf vehicles. The recall covers 993 vehicles manufactured between April 2, 2014, and December 3, 2014. Specifically, Jetta vehicles were manufactured from September 8, 2014, to November 28, 2014; Golf vehicles from April 2, 2014, to December 3, 2014; and E-Golf vehicles from July 26, 2014, to October 18, 2014.
The affected vehicles are equipped with a Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) that may have been manufactured improperly. As a result, the system may incorrectly classify or fail to detect an occupant in the front passenger seat. In the event of a crash, this malfunction could cause the passenger frontal air bag to deploy improperly or not at all, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the PODS control module free of charge. The recall began on November 20, 2015. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69L6. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov.
