What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect may cause components to be propelled into the interior, potentially seriously injuring occupants, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury' reports or risks.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles due to a defect in the front driver air bag inflator. The affected vehicles were manufactured between September 15, 2014, and January 21, 2015, for the Chevrolet Colorado, and between October 3, 2014, and December 9, 2014, for the GMC Canyon.
The defect involves the air bag inflator potentially being misaligned to the air bag module backplate. This misalignment can cause the inflator to separate from the backplate during deployment. If this occurs in a crash, the air bag or steering wheel components may separate and be propelled into the interior compartment, potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants. Additionally, the air bag may fail to inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury.
Dealers will inspect the driver air bag module inflator for proper alignment and replace the air bag if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15037.
