MINI Cooper Recalled for Incorrect Tire Information Placard Weight Label
BMW is recalling 2014-2015 MINI Cooper Hardtop vehicles because the Tire Information Placard lists an incorrect maximum capacity weight, failing to comply with federal safety standards.
What this means for you
Cosmetic or documentation issue. No expected health impact, but the manufacturer is correcting the affected products.
Our severity reasoning: The recall addresses a documentation and labeling error where the weight limit is stated too low, which is a packaging/documentation issue unlikely to cause adverse health consequences or immediate physical harm.
Plain-English summary
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 MINI Cooper Hardtop two-door vehicles manufactured between December 1, 2013, and December 14, 2014. The recall involves 13,130 vehicles that may have been manufactured with an incorrect maximum capacity weight stated on the Tire Information Placard.
The maximum weight listed on the label is incorrect (too low) and therefore does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 110, which governs tire selection and load carrying capacity information for motor vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less.
MINI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect labels with corrected labels free of charge. Owners were mailed interim notification on March 18, 2015, and the recall began on October 15, 2015. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
