BMW Recalls 2014-2015 MINI Cooper Models for Side Impact Defect

BMW is recalling 2014-2015 MINI Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works vehicles because rear seats fail federal side impact safety standards, increasing injury risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (body structure) that fails to meet federal safety standards for side impact protection, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S Hardtop 2 Door vehicles, as well as 2015 MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop 2 Door vehicles. The recall affects approximately 30,456 vehicles.

The affected vehicles do not meet the side impact performance requirements for rear seat passengers, meaning they fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection." If these requirements are not met, rear seat passengers may be at a higher risk of injury during a crash.

MINI will notify owners, and dealers will install additional energy absorption material between the rear interior side panels and the exterior vehicle body free of charge. The recall began on September 4, 2015. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
