Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles. This recall affects vehicles manufactured between March 2004 and August 2011 that had their upper intermediate steering shaft serviced during a previous safety recall (13V-385). The recall covers approximately 36,888 vehicles.
The defect involves the possibility that the prior repairs to the upper intermediate shaft were not correctly performed. Improper servicing could cause the shaft to separate, resulting in a loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford will notify owners of vehicles whose repair records reflect that the upper intermediate steering shaft was repaired during the prior recall. Dealers will inspect and replace the upper intermediate shaft if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 17, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
