BMW is recalling specific 2012-2014 models because a vacuum pump may fail due to insufficient lubrication, reducing braking power and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the braking system that reduces braking power and increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling certain model year 2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, 2012-2014 BMW 320i and 328i Sedans (including xDrive variants), 2012-2013 BMW 528i Sedans (including xDrive variants), 2013-2014 BMW X1 and X3 Sports Activity Vehicles, 2012-2014 BMW Z4 Roadsters, and 2014 BMW 428i Coupes (including xDrive variants). This recall is an expansion of a previous recall (13V-454).

The defect involves insufficient lubrication in the vacuum pump that supplies brake power assistance. If the pump fails, it results in a reduction in braking power, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Owners will be notified by BMW. Dealers will install a locking ring in the camshaft to retain the camshaft seal disk in the proper location, free of charge. The recall began on December 2, 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
