GM Recalls 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS and CTS for Transmission Cable Defect
General Motors is recalling 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS and 2014 CTS vehicles because the transmission shift cable may detach, causing unintended movement or rollaway.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (transmission shift cable detachment) that can cause unintended vehicle movement and rollaway, posing a significant risk of injury to occupants and bystanders, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Cadillac ATS vehicles manufactured between April 23, 2012, and March 20, 2014, and 2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured between June 10, 2013, and March 20, 2014. The recall involves approximately 90,750 vehicles.
In the affected vehicles, the transmission shift cable may detach from either the bracket on the transmission shifter or the bracket on the transmission. If this occurs while driving, the transmission gear selection may not match the indicated gear, causing the vehicle to move in an unintended or unexpected direction and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the driver selects the 'PARK' position, the transmission may not actually be in 'PARK,' creating a risk that the vehicle will roll away when occupants exit.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to ensure the cable is properly seated at the transmission and shifter brackets, free of charge. The recall was expected to begin in early August 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
