What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (electrical system) that creates a risk of fire, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury or property-damage reports/risks.

Plain-English summary

Van Hool N.V. is recalling certain model year 2004, 2006, and 2013 C2045 Coaches. The recall involves vehicles equipped with Sure Power Battery Equalizers that contain a specific epoxy sealing, or 'potting', compound. This compound was found to be capable of conducting electricity after exposure to heat.

Once the material becomes electrically conductive, it is capable of melting and burning, which increases the risk of a fire. The recall covers 18 affected vehicles.

Van Hool's designated agent, ABC Bus, Inc., will notify owners. Sure Power will replace the converters free of charge. The recall began on August 26, 2014, and Van Hool's number for this recall is P725. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
